What’s happened to teachers?
Recently I came across a Facebook post of a friend in which he posted a picture of his teacher from school and so eloquently eulogised him. He went about describing how he was a positive influence in his life and that of his other fellow schoolmates. This after almost 40 years after his schooling.
It did bring about memories of some of the most wonderful teachers I had in my own life who left a profound impact.
Got me thinking!

I meet and talk to so many youngsters today which of course includes my son; not once did I hear them eulogise their teachers or talk positively about them. Most don’t even remember the names of their teachers who taught them in their Std I or II.
I could reel out the names of all my teachers from Class I to XII without much effort. I could do, as each one of them had a definite role in shaping me and who I am today. I remember them with a sense of gratitude.
Why is it that today’s generation is not having such a feeling towards their teachers? What is wrong? Are teachers no longer leaving a positive impression on children? Are they no longer the role models they used to be decades ago? Are they no longer passionate about shaping a young mind?
Has teaching become just another ‘profession’ like any other to earn a livelihood and not build lives?
Come to think of it; commercialisation of education has had a deep impact in the way the whole teaching community is approaching this noble act of moulding lives.
Today, its just getting the numbers done, completing the requisite number of classes within time, running from one class to the other to be on time. I rarely find teachers today who are willing to stretch beyond the closing time to talk to children.
It’s all become very mechanical and with little emotion, empathy and care left in the whole process.
I am sure there are a few who still teach with passion; but this tribe is dwindling.
Where has the ‘passion’ gone? What’s happened to our ‘teachers’?
It’s time for teachers to wake up and remember “It’s your great responsibility in shaping the future of this world”
Let’s start naming and sharing about our teachers so that it inspires the current lot.
If you ever had teachers who left a positive impact in your life please like and share this post as much as you can.
This is one way to express your ‘Gratitude’.
